Urgent Needs

This is our wish list for Haiti. As our team on the ground has expanded the Haiti Response Coalition’s capacity to serve the most vulnerable in the new tent cities throughout Port-au-Prince and in Jacmel, we have had no difficulty assembling lists of the things we need most. A major challenge for us since day one after the earthquake is the transportation and delivery of these essential items to our partner communities on the ground in Haiti. Once the aid gets to the Coalition on the ground, distribution will be fairly simple. The Coalition has already laid the foundation for success aid distribution by working with community leaders, completing preliminary assessments and carefully planning each step in the process. To ensure we can get aid from generous people, communities and companies in the U.S. to the people who can distribute it effectively on the ground, we have these needs:

**A warehouse in Miami or southern Florida where we can collect and temporarily house donated items for further shipment.  HRC has attained warehouse space with a shipper in Miami – Econocaribe Consolidators, Inc — that is able to receive items from our Urgent Needs list (see list below), especially tents; coordination of item donations, storage and shipment must be done through HRC’s Sarah Cool at coolsarahs@gmail.com.  Special thanks to Hans Schnoor and Econocaribe Consolidators, Inc!

**Boats to transport containers of donations to the port in Santo Domingo.

**EVEN BETTER: Clearance to bring boats of supplies directly into the ports of Jacmel, Petit Goave, Saint Marc, or Miragoane, Haiti.

**THE BEST: Planes to transport supplies directly to Haiti, and clearance to land in Port-au-Prince and Jacmel.

Want to donate something or organize a donation drive?

These are the donation priorities we will try to update this list regularly as needs on the ground change.

1. Shelter Needs: Tarps, ropes, plastic sheeting and tents. Also, hammers and nails. Visit the Updates Section of this site to view the Pre-Planning Guide for Tent-for-Haiti Drive (March 3, 2010 Post).  This Guide provides comprehensive information about the urgent need for shelter in Haiti, including some suggested models/types of tents that would be best suited for various locations in Haiti.  Visit the Tents for Haiti site to learn more about the tent collection and distribution initiative.

2. Personal Hygiene Needs: Hygiene kits (toothpaste, tooth brush, soap, deodorant); Feminine hygiene products

3. Solar rechargeable lamps/flashlights

4. Information Technology Needs: Laptop computers, digital cameras, wireless routers

5. Crutches

6. Mosquito Nets

7. Open Pollinated Seeds (no hybrids) that are climate appropriate.

8. Your monetary donations to the individual members of the Haiti Response Coalition help to defray the costs of shipping, purchasing food and necessary medical supplies and equipment, and more. Visit member organization websites to learn more.

Special thanks  for outstanding donations to and support of the Haiti Response Coalition:

Hans Schnoor and Econocaribe Consolidators, Inc is helping us with warehouse space, packing of containers and the shipping of Relief Goods at a special/all inclusive price per 20 foot and 40 foot container. We would like to extend our thanks for coordinating these efforts with us.

Aaron Jackson and Planting Peace are making de-worming medications available to the Haiti Response Coalition to be administered in the tent communities we are working to support.

Greg Allgood and Allison Tummon from P&G are helping us connect with World Vision to get packets of PUR water purification product.

Potters for Peace based in the Dominican Republic visited Haiti with Jeff Rogers and distributed their clay water filters. They hope to set up a factory to produce the filters on the ground – clean water and job creation, nice!
